Avoiding Insanity

The New Year is a great time for reflection; a celebration of the successes of last year, a review of what didn’t go so well and thoughts about what to do better this year.

Einstein’s famous definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result.

So, what will you do differently this year?  Here are 3 essentials:

1.       Love what you do – remember you only have one innings in life.  The average person will spend at least 2,000 hours at work this year.  Take positive action to either re-invent your role, delegate what you don’t love or find something to do that lights your fire.

 2.       Remember the business is there to serve you; not the other way round – you should not feel like a slave to your business.  You are the one who gets to decide how your business runs.  Get above the line, take ownership of and responsibility for getting that control back.  You do not need to be a victim here

3.       Make a plan – if you are failing to plan you are planning to fail; not necessarily failing in business but certainly failing in steps one and two above.  Your annual plan should cover what you want the business to deliver to you personally this year (your role, your income and your hours of work), why your business even exists (your purpose) and your 4 most important goals to achieve for the year.

And now that you’ve taken the time to read this, in order to ensure these 3 steps actually happen, why not have someone independent hold you to account for doing them?  Not only will they happen this way, but the results are likely to be even better.
